How to Teach Leadership Skills

Children today are taught about many great and powerful leaders — Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Winston Churchill, Einstein, etc. What makes a good leader?

People used to think that great leaders were born that way, and the rest of us were destined to be their followers. But now it is generally believed that great leaders are made, not born. Children and adults can learn to develop certain qualities that reflect strong leadership. They just need some nurturing and guidance.

What are the qualities of a great leader?

  • Clear vision that is well communicated
  • Energy that comes from seeing the vision fulfilled
  • Confidence in self and others
  • Integrity that others respect
  • Compassion that creates a climate of acceptance and challenge
  • Ability to influence others to believe in a cause and join in their efforts
  • Generous with credit and praise for those who deserve it.

How do we know if our child has the potential to be a great leader?

Take a cue from the child’s personality. Is he friendly and interested in people? Is he able to delay rewards till later? Can he stay focused on a task? Is she honest? Is she enthusiastic about interests? Is she confident in herself? Do people like her and naturally place her in leadership positions?

A question that is just as valid is whether the adults in the child’s life have the potential to advance that child to great heights once the child shows promise and interest. It takes commitment, hard work and resources to help move a child to the top. One parent said it best: "A parent of a child with leadership potential has to be a manager for that child." Parents should be ready and willing to support the child who is energized by leading the pack.

Should every child be taught to be a leader?

Not everyone can or should be a leader – we need good followers, too. It’s perfectly OK for a child to be a follower, as long as she can stand up for herself. A child should never be pushed too hard into leadership positions.

But understanding how to visualize a future and how to pursue it are leadership qualities that give every child a head start in life. So it is important to teach those skills to children and teens.
