Families of children who have been abused need a great deal of support. When the child is taken to Project Harmony for a medical exam to establish the abuse, our therapist helps the family understand the process of obtaining social histories and briefing the doctor on the situation, and then answers questions the family may have. In addition, the therapist assesses the child’s mental health needs and refers the family to therapy, support groups and other appropriate resources. The therapist follows up with the families in the weeks and months that follow to help ensure that both parents and child get the professional services they need to recover from this traumatic experience.
