“I want people to understand how important this agency is—how critical these services are
to our community.” Terry Watanabe, on his decision to support Heartland Family Service.
The Terry K. Watanabe Foundations Charitable Trick or Treat event has been a tradition for many years, and is renowned for the substantial treats the children receive. Initially, Heartland Family Service was selected to receive a donation of $5 for every child who trick or treats, up to a maximum of $25,000. Two weeks before Halloween, Mr. Watanabe doubled his contribution to $10 per child, up to a maximum of $50,000. That night, about 3,500 children attended the event, along with volunteers from the Heartland Family Service Student League and Junior Friends volunteers. While watching the children in their costumes and after reflecting on the important and diverse services Heartland Family Service provides, Mr. Watanabe decided to donate the entire $50,000 to support Heartland Family Service’s youth programs—regardless of the fact that “only” 3,500 children attended.

Volunteers at the Watanabe Trick or Treat Event worked hard to keep the candy coming!
Terry Watanabe said, on his decision to support Heartland Family Service, “I want people to understand how important this agency is—how critical these services are to our community. I was surprised to learn that Heartland Family Service addresses such a broad array of issues—child abuse, juvenile crime, domestic violence, mental health, addictions treatment and community support. So this event will give Omaha kids a chance to help less fortunate children through their Halloween trick or treating.“

Visitors lined up at Terry Watanabe’s Trick or Treat Event. The worth was well worth the wait – children received generous servings of candy!
