The 14th annual Heartland Family Service Safe Haven Golf Event, held July 9 at Ironwood Golf & Country Club, raised an estimated $61,000 for victims of domestic abuse. The event was hosted by the Heartland Family Service Friends Guild and was sponsored by Arby's Panda, Inc.; Kiewit Building Group, Inc.; Superior Honda of Omaha and Acura of Omaha.
This year marked the second annual morning nine-hole event. Eleven teams participated in the events of the morning tournament under an overcast sky and a cool breeze. A luncheon and awards ceremony followed with plenty of shared laughter and friendship. The 18-hole event began at noon with lunch furnished by Arby’s, followed by 28 teams that scattered across the course for the shotgun start. The golfers’ skills ranged from expert to fun-loving, and everyone enjoyed a nice afternoon on the beautiful Ironwood course. Afterward, everyone was ready for the steak dinner and awards ceremony that followed.
Dianne Scott served as chairmen for the morning 9-hole event, and Marcia and Steve Pitlor along with Kim and Doug Alvine served as co-chairs for the afternoon 18-hole event. Kim Lubeck is president of the Heartland Family Service Friends guild, which hosted the golf event. The guild provides volunteers and fundraising for Heartland Family Service programs.
The next Safe Haven Golf Event is scheduled for June 30, 2008 at Ironwood Golf & Country Club.
