A day of Fun in the sun for Heartland "HALO" kids
The Heartland Family Service "HALO" program held its annual summer
picnicon Friday, July 15 at Elmwood Park. According to Jeana Tortorilla,
a Drug Prevention Educator with Heartland Family Service, “Nearly
150 children attended the picnic
this year. The children came from seven area child care centers and preschools who participate in the "HALO" (Healthy Alternatives for
Little Ones) curriculum.” Tortorilla added,“The children ate a catered
picniclunch and enjoyed outdoor games and booths. They played Frisbee, competed in fun and healthy outdoor competitions – including a rope jumping contest and a beach-ball race. The children left the picnic with sacks full of prizes, and smiles on their faces!”
“The favorite attraction, by far, was the ‘tattoo’ booth,” said Tortortilla. Volunteers from Heartland Family Service Student League, Junior Friends and the Solomon Girls Center ‘tattooed’ the children with rub-on temporary tattoos. “The boys,” Tortilla added, “favored the bugs and dinosaurs, while the girls chose from colorful butterflies and glitter tattoos. They were all very excited about showing them off to each other.”
