Pete Tulipana has 30 years of professional management experience with nonprofit health and human service organizations, serving as president and CEO of Heartland Family Service since 1987. His expertise includes board development, strategic planning, program development and evaluation, organizational behavior and policy development.
Pete is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, teaching nonprofit leadership and board development. Tulipana has served on the advisory council for Nebraska Health and Human Services and as a consultant for area nonprofit organizations. He has successfully led board retreats, training and strategic planning processes for various nonprofit organizations. He has a master’s degree in social work from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Missouri.
The success of Pete’s leadership was recognized most recently when, through its Excellence in Business awards, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce recognized Heartland Family Service as its 2005 Not-For-Profit Organization of the Year—the first year of the award.
John Herzog
Senior Vice President of Administration & Finance
John Herzog began his term at Heartland Family Service as the coordinator of our Bellevue Multi-Service Center in 1978. He currently manages the administrative and financial components of the agency. He now oversees technology, accounting, risk management, contract administration, human resources and facility operations. The fiscal unit currently administers governmental and government supported agency grants and contracts with 30 different federal, state and local agencies. Heartland Family Service currently employs over 250 staff.
Ann O’Connor
Vice President, Nebraska Community Services
Ann O’Connor directs the outreach programs of the agency. These include the domestic abuse program in Cass and Sarpy counties with its Safe Haven shelter for victims, neighborhood emergency services in North Omaha and Sarpy County, North Omaha Career Closet, Gendler Emergency Medication Service in North Omaha, Solomon Girls Center, Family and Child Care Resource Center, USDA Child and Adult Food Program, two children’s
emergency shelters, and the intensive family preservation
program. Ann joined the agency in 2003.
Nancy Schulze
Vice President, Iowa Professional Services
Nancy Schulze joined Heartland Family Service in 2001 with 15 years’ administrative
and management experience. She is in charge of all Iowa
programs, reaching out into 11 counties. She oversees the
Iowa juvenile justice programs; mental health counseling;
addictions treatment for alcohol, drugs and compulsive gambling;
homeless services and the Transitions apartments; YouthNet;
and the new therapeutic school for youth with behavioral
issues.
Carolyn Thiele
Vice President, Nebraska Professional Services
Carolyn Thiele
has an extensive background in public and nonprofit
agencies, including direct service as well as management
level positions. She administers the Nebraska juvenile justice
programs, parenting and divorce classes, substance abuse
prevention programs, mental health and substance abuse counseling,
School And Family Enrichment (SAFE) program, senior
services and quality improvement programs. Carolyn joined
Heartland Family Service in 2002.
Laura Iliff is
responsible for resource development. She will assist you
with opportunities to partner with Heartland Family Service
in our work with vulnerable children and families. She assists
with individual and corporate gifts, event sponsorships,
planned giving and endowments. Laura provides consultation
to staff for program fund-raising activities and supervises
major fund-raising events and activities, facilitates the
work of the Heartland Family Service Friends volunteer guild,
and manages the agency volunteer program.
Barbara Jessing
is widely known in her profession for her high-quality approach
to counseling. She joined the agency in 1982 and now manages
a staff of more than 50 counselors and several psychologists
who provide mental and behavioral health counseling in programs
as diverse as child abuse and neglect, domestic abuse, juvenile
justice, geriatric mental health, substance abuse, compulsive
gambling, employee assistance and therapeutic education.
She is frequently interviewed by the media for her insight
into individual and family issues.
Dawn Bashara is responsible for communications activities at Heartland Family Service including community relations, marketing & promotions,
media relations, print production, website management and
the Salute to Families program. She works frequently with
the media to address family and parenting issues in the
news. Dawn has been with Heartland Family Service since
1981.
