Solomon Girls Center 19th Annual Scholarship Brunch

-Previous Brunches- |2005 | 2004 |

2006 Ruth K. Solomon Scholarship Awards

Three young women earned recognition with a scholarship and awards at the 19th annual Heartland Family Service Ruth K. Solomon Girls Center Scholarship Brunch on Saturday, May 6, at the North High Viking Center.

Catherine Goodwin was presented a $1,000 scholarship awarded for academic excellence, strong leadership abilities and high potential for success. Catherine attended the Solomon Girls Center during her elementary and junior high years. She credits her growing-up in a large family and her love for children for fostering her desire to pursue a teaching career. Catherine attends UNO, and is on track to graduate in 2007. She looks forward to teaching and knows that teachers “really do make a difference.”

Malika Dovie Douglas received the Faye D. Douglas Perseverance Achievement Award for exhibiting outstanding progress in personal growth during her past year at Solomon. Malika is very helpful and she always completes her tasks. She is energetic and very polite to everyone. She is recognized for her hard work, high grades and dedication.

Rayona Frazier was received the Triumph Award, presented for cooperation and teamwork. Rayona is known around the Center for her loving and kind spirit. She has a genuine, humble personality and is incredibly sharing and loving toward her fellow Solomon members.

Keynote speaker Carol Mitchell is an associate professor in the Teacher Education Department at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Dr. Mitchell delivered an impassioned message. Her theme was “It Takes Teamwork to Make a Dream Work – and there is no “I” in TEAM.”  She stated that her message was not only for the girls, but also for the families of the young ladies and for the community at large, “ . . . because WE make the TEAM.” She emphasized that the girls have achieved these awards through grace and mercy, and “. . . I look forward to the day when I say
. . . let us greet Dr. Catherine, Dr. Malika and Dr. Rayona. Don’t’ misunderstand me, it is NOT about a title. But my reference is to the fact that YES, DAUGHTER YOU CAN!"

Guests and members also took time to remember Solomon Girls Center member Aleasha Tiller. Aleasha passed away last year and remains greatly missed at the center. Lisa Lewis, Aleasha's mother, was presented a memorial award in honor of her daughter.

Committee members of this year's scholarship awards program include Kathy J. Trotter, general chairman and Joe Patterson, vice-chairman. General members include Noni Abram, Lesley Dean, Faye D. Douglas, Terra Johnson and Rachelle Tucker.
